Im thinking of treating myself to a BMW 3 series convertible; chopping the Leon FR tdi in favour of a drop top. Been looking at 318ci M Sport convertible; but i fear the 318 will be too slow

The reason i have been thinking of a 318 is mainly due to mpg, insurance, tax etc.. I have had in the past a 330 and loved that; but i really dont want something that is going to drink the juice as then it would end up not getting used and we would always take the 1 series cos its cheaper. I dont use a car most days as pretty much home based; but when i do is generally a few hundered miles. Apart from that its just local running round, golf club, picking daughter up etc....

But will it be annoyingly slow

Friend of mine has an 03 plate one. It's a coupe though so not quite as heavy.

I wouldn't say it's 'slow'. It's by no means fast but i wouldn't say it's annoying. Just normal...

The N42 engine's are very problematic. I would advise against it tbh.

Im in the same situation. I want to sell my 330 for a 318.

The engines are very unreliable and probably a bit too slow to enjoy it. A 320d is out the question because they cost so much more.

If i do sell mine for another i would probably go for a 320. I know that you're paying the extra petrol on something that isnt much quicker than a 318 but i think it'll be a good enough comprimise and still enjoyable.

318 is not bad - basiclaly same engine as the 320 bar intakes etc

I can only comment on the E90 318i and its not slow

for me there is very little in the 320 and 318 petrols in everyday driving

Not that this is relevant to you but they are also epically loud with a cat-back.

And minus 2 cylinders and 8 valves.

Not the same engine.

Google N42 engine problems and you will be put off for life.

I had an E46 Compact for 6 days and for 5 of those days, i had the engine in bits at least 10 times trying to chase a problem.

Once something isn't right, 9 times out of 10 you won't get a definate answer as to what the problem is. Most of the time its a case of try something and see if it sorts it.

Was thinking this Reason i said 320 was because you still get the proper bmw sound and although it wont be as cheap to run than the 318 it wont be as embarassing/boring to drive.

I bet the 320 would probably do better MPG tbh.

That Compact i had was showing 23mpg from town driving. It was epically slow also from low down the revs.

My old mans E90 330i does better MPG than what the Compact done.

Sounds like you had a shed lol, but i know of a lot of 318s that are the same way, the engines are awful!

My mate has a 323 and that does loads of miles, he must get at least double to what i do in the 330. Depends what the miles are used for, on the motorway i would just choose a 330 again but around town im way below 20mpg.

It probably was. Eventually got it sorted, the oil separator was blocked (common fault) and was a nightmare of a job to do. Once it was sorted, the MPG wasn't any better, but the car drove much better, but was still dog slow. They are heavy cars with a puny 4cyl engine, so not going to see good mpg as you need to work them hard.

Dads 330i does 27mpg easy from town driving. Different engine from the E46 though i think.

I think the very 1st of them in the E46 was a 2.0 straight 6 from the E36, then changed to the 2.2.

i had an E46 318ci, was a 2000 model, think its a 1.9 8 valve engine.

they are stupidly slow, never had a problem with it though even on 120k, alright on fuel and still well built.

My 318ci gets low 30's to the gallon. Can sometimes see nearly 40mpg on a run at about 65ish

320d all day, costs more, but cheaper to run, and worth more when you sell it, so overall the total cost can be less
