Britain's immigration system increases the risk to the public of HIV transmission, it has been claimed.It also harms the health of asylum seekers already with the virus, a report by MPs has warned.The All Party Parliamentary Group on AIDS says in most cases there's a total lack of communication between the Home Office, the main support group and social services.

It believes this could put asylum seekers in situations where they become more ill or respond less to treatment.

The MPs also considered whether or not people should be tested for HIV at the point of entry to the UK.

They concluded the Government should not try to keep out people on health grounds when the world is facing the largest pandemic ever seen.

But they recommend policies that encourage asylum seekers to have medical checks with a view to treatment if needed.

They say increasing access to treatment could reduce the risk of transmission and limit the long term costs to the NHS.

The report also said the Government should not detain people with serious communicable diseases such as HIV if it cannot provide care for them in removal centres.
