Got back from our wedding/honeymoon last month. We'd paid an extra £250 to upgrade the room for one with a sea view, this is what we got:

Did a vid, granted you can see the sea if you go out onto the balcony, but I though the extra would have at least got us a room 'facing' the sea.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaxzcjnKuVY

Hotel staff weren't interested. Wrote a letter of complaint when we got back, they're still not interested.

Some similar stuff on the reviews on Trip Advisor:

"Then upon entering the room later, we realized that not only it was small, but it wasn't the "sea-view" we booked online... It wasn't even side sea view, to look at the sea you had to stand over the rail of the balcony, practically risking falling down"

" .So I called and complained because I wanted a sea view room. They told me that THIS IS a seaview room! "

Are we right to complain?

technically it is a sea view. does it say anything about facing the sea in the description? if not, i don't think you'll get anything back.

Well you can technically see the sea but I'd expect an upgraded sea view room to be actually facing the sea.

I have seen some hotels where they state wether it is a 'side' sea view or a 'front facing' sea view.

surprised the Hotel did nothing to meet your expectations. Did you speak directly to the Manager? what did the staff say to you exactly?

Before we went we explicitly emailed the hotel to ensure the room had a sea view which they confirmed it would have.

Went to reception and complained soon as a I seen the room, asked them to move us, they said the only rooms facing the sea are the 'Executive Sea View' Rooms, all of which were booked and that the one we had to them is classed as sea view.

Asked them to downgrade us to a non-sea view room since thats what we had anyway and to give us the extra £250 we'd paid back. They said because we'd booked through a third party they weren't able to.

Asked to speak with manager, female manager came out, started politely, pointing out it was our honeymoon(no acknowledgement of this even though they knew in advance), getting nowhere I kicked up a fuss in the reception, embarrassing her infront of other customers, still nothing, not even a bottle of champers to say sorry.

Spoke to another young couple, turns out they'd complained about the same thing, and on route out one night overheard some new arrivals kicking off at reception about it. They're obviously very used to it.

The third party are attempting to deal with the complaint with the hotel but the hotel keep fobbing them off with misleading pictures like this which gives the impression the room is facing the sea and is clearly not the room we were in, rather one at the end closest to the sea rather than furthest away as ours was.

I dont think its THAT bad, but as it was your honeymoon I know you'd want everything to be perfect.

I think you were right to complain upon arrival, but probably best to drop it now, they're obviously been sly with the wording.

This was our sea view room on our honeymoon in April.

I think you have every right to complain. Its a special holiday.

As Lawrah says did you enjoy it apart from that.

Piss poor customer service tbh.

Yes honeymoon was epic thank you, so was the wedding(same two weeks out there), everything went really well on the day considering we did it all ourselves without a wedding planner and on a major budget!

Snap from the day:

Love Cyprus and had some of the best food we've ever had.

Guess I'll fire off one last response to their e-mail and drop it if we have no luck.

I think you will struggle to get anything. The only hope is if you have gone through a 3rd party UK dealer and they feel sympathetic to your cause.

Same here, mine was a a free uPgrade as a very good friend is an independent travel agent so she threw her weight around. Had a bottle of champers and a bottle of rum in our room plus a free upgrade to premium economy on virgin Atlantic to the Caribbean and back.

I guess there are some various slants on the term 'sea view'.

I'l update with next response, if we even get one that is, its taken 5 weeks for them to reply to my letter.

Customer service is almost as bad as Samsung(don't get me started on them).

ps. Macbook was a no go...kinda of glad now as I want to spend the money on a bike

Indeed!

For 250£ extra I'd be complaining about what you got though.
