Going in January, Not been before, any recommended hotels or any that should be avoided. Looking for a clean place in a central location near sights, small room not a problem, as only 2 going and very little time will be spent, just a place to sleep. cheers

When I went we walked across the road from the train station, and got a room at a B&B. While being asked every 50 yards if we wanted to buy any coke.

stayed here http://www.conscioushotels.com/
was nice and 7min tram journey into the centre.
Also nice parks around that area and decent coffee shops off the tourist trail ;-)

If money's no object then either Krasnapolsky on Dam Square or the Radisson Central, just outside the Red Light District. Either is stunning

90EUR a night on their website?

We walked straight out of the station (Amsterdam Centraal) and walked down this way: CLICK ME

On the right hand side there's loads of tourist information places, we went in and asked someone for a place for us (6 of us) to stay. We paid 30 or 35 EUR each (expensive if you add it together but we expected to pay around 25-35 EUR a night each anyway) to get an apartment. Was above a restaurant/cafe called Gusto's. To be fair it wasn't the cleanest but we didn't spend a massive amount of time in there, had a fridge for the beer and was a smoking room - was a 30 second walk from the Red Light District and plenty of café's, bars and a supermarket

Want to go back really bad - how much did you pay for your flights?
