I have decided don't want to put the xe into my nova standard after all the work I have done to it so ill be doing basic tuning to it, cams pulleys and carbs or tb's to be exact.. But I can't make my mind up what ones to go for? any help on this would be much appreciated. Also if I do go for carbs what is a decent set up and should I go for twin 40's or 45's? What are the pros and cons. Cheers

Throttle bodies seem to be the best to go for but cost quite a bit more.

Bike carbs sound a bit unreliable compared to twins. But I've never had any so I can go only go on what I've read!

Also some peoples views will differ...

TB's. mate of mine works for a company making TB's and he raves like mad about em. Had a 106 GTi on tb's and he also has one. Sound amazing and great power gains.

For example:
106 GTi - 120bhp
With cams/exhaust looking 140/150bhp
With cams/exhaust and throttles looking around 170-180. Mine was 173bhp.

I'd expect a healthy XE with exhaust cams and throttles to see around 200bhp??

Throttle bodies! A set of jenvey and omex went on the bay last week for £900!!

throttle bodies! not fun in traffic though as they like to be reving and under load especialy with big cams.

i am on tbs and there great and they dont need seting up every mornig just turn the key and away you go and tbs will be better on fuel than carbs too you will get a good setup like mine for around 2k

Has to be throttle bodies. My old Jenvey tapers drove just like a normal car, they are great. I've also had R1 carbs you never can get them to work perfect in every day driving. I sold my old TB set for £1300.

A set of good throttle bodies with a aftermarket ecu bud,will be easier to re-adjust the ecu for any other mods that you do.Bike carbs seem to be the cheapest option but possibly slighly more power to be had from the webbers or dellortos but most power and drivability is from throttle bodies(jenvey).
Have fun listening to them whatever you deside.

it'll be a huge money pit to get a set of bodies doing it rite, constant mapping aswell...

my mates got over 15k in a xe on bodies and he's still having troubles. think his are jenvys with DTA managent and loom, cosworth pistons and some £££ head work... still hasn't got much better times on the strip that it did as a practically standard engine with bodies

No it won't. And why would it be constant mapping? Mates had his for around 2 years now and is still running fine and hasn't been remapped since. And it's used for racing.

Steyboy is good wouldnt let rs map a wheel barrow rs did ste powels tigra and it made more power than speckys so it got mapped down and i have heard the mess they made of allan duffys map to and chris at efi who maps mine bigrons and a few others sorted it out

But for price V power you get cabs must win? seens a good 2nd kit go for £500 not long ago were as TB's are like £900+ 2nd hand and would still need mapping ect?

aye well steve done a lot of the engine work and tbh he's done a good job, it shit the bed at PVS but i did warn him to run it in a bit more (new build). crank bearings where completely gone after it spat an oil line (dry sump) but that in itself is a different issue
iv heard similar stories of RS too
think it did 232bhp and cant remember the torque figure but it was pretty good, however he was expecting 280bhp'ish
think cams is next as you'd know yourself possy

i got my throttle body kit from QED for around £1400, jenvey dth, loom, dta s40pro ecu, software, dis pack. adjustable fpr, choice of 40mm or 60mm ram pipes. time i had got all the other parts, linkage, pipe work ect came to around £1800, got a 20bhp gain on the engine with flowed head, cams and 4branch allready so took it up to 186bhp (its an x20xev) drove great flew through mot's and good mpg averaged 28mpg on vpower. now with cosworth 12-1 high comp pistons and bigger kent cams its up to 226bhp, mapped at stealth racing as dta say vince is the best in uk for live mapping of the dta ecu's. hasnt cost me to much to bulid, maybe £6k all in for the engine and mapped. more is availible with bigger cams and cnc head work, larger valves and better exhaust system. i know a 20xe with the same £ spent would be 250+bhp but i like what ive got.

With my new ported polished head plus 2mm oversized cams ect big cams should be running around 250 to 260 hp all will be good then and all what is holding me back is my ashly manifold going for a sbd one when i can afford it as they are quite dear

TB's have been used on most of the rally cars I've worked on, carbs are cheaper (in some instances) yes but they require tweaking at every service at a rally, don't know what it would be like on the road but I'd imagine carbs would have to be tweeked every now & then.

@Possy John Reid Racing Products do really, really nice stainless 2.5" manifolds for the C20XE, but they're about £500. I put a RWD one on a C20XE in a MK2 Escort, lovely. I think they do one for FWD too.
