Does anyone have any opinions on these? Seems to be the one of the smallest bodies out there with a 10mm lens, ideal for me taking pictures of properties when I can't take the SLR. They're going for around £200 on ebay with the 10-30mm lens, or £250 with that and 30-110mm lens, not too badly priced.

Remember the x2.7 crop factor when reading the lens spec.

I like these cameras (mirrorless in general) but the combination of narrow apertures and ISO noise would put me off the J1.

A lot of compacts today deliver a larger aperture and a (slightly) wider zoom.

In the end, I guess it depends if you think the camera does what you need. As with all else in this world, there are compromises that need to be made.

Any recommendations for a better one? The only options I really need are adjustable shutter speed and ideally around a 10mm lens to take wide enough shots.

10mm equivalent? Don't think that's ever going to happen on something that's not full frame.

Might be proven wrong, though...

Near enough, the 40d I use with 10-20mm Sigma rarely strays from the 10mm setting. Wishful thinking perhaps.

40D will be 1.6x crop, so you're looking for a 16mm equivalent.

Can't think of any compact or mirrorless that goes wider than 24 mm...

Your best bet would probably be a mini SLR like the 1100D or similar. Will be smaller than your 40D, but not by a mile. Certainly will not be pocketable, but that goes for a mirrorless as well.

You could of course look for a mirrorless with a larger sensor than the J1 and get an adaptor to fit your sigma lens. No clue what the real world results would be like and would certainly cost you more than £200.
