For those that haven't already heard the news, due to getting bored of driving a van all the time and the fact my brother's selling his car that I currently use for towing, the time had come to get something of my own.
List of requirements where;
Comfort
Cruise control
Auto
Big boot (as in big enough for at least 2 table top coffee machines, tools and a couple of boxes of parts)
Good for towing
and something that wasn't going to be too much of a kick in the nads after the Combo doing 50 mpg and me doing a lot of miles
All for less than 3.5 grand.
And the end result;
2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD.
Yes the fuel consumption requirement did have to be compromised slightly but it seems to be one of the most fuel efficient engines fitted to a big 4x4 of that era and it still shifts 2.1 tonnes of Jeep fairly well so I can cope with paying more in fuel for the extra luxuries that I get over a 1.3 Combo.

It hasn't upto now  I had it on 27.2 the other day after a drive over to Goole and back, around 200 miles but it's over the M62 so not your typical flat motorway run, I reckon there'll be times when I can crack 30 though. Since I got it last Sunday, I've averaged 24.8 but that's been one long run and loads of little local run so it's got potential.

Well, you beat my mpg on a trip to goole, last time I went there I averaged around 8mpg!

A Combo  He's decided not to replace it for now so he's just going to be using that for a while.

Excellent machine.
I reckon you could attain 30mpg. These engines are renowned for their efficiency, same as in the ML270 iirc.

Yeah it's the Merc 5 pot, I have seen mention of people regularly getting 32-33 mpg but judging by what I've seen upto now that might be a bit optimistic for mine. Saying that though, I did spend the afternoon trying to free of a sticking caliper so that won't have been helping my consumption figures. I should have my first run down to London on Tuesday so we'll see how it goes then.

Really like these and keep getting tempted by the cheap petrol ones with LPG.

Haha, it's the fronts on mine, they changed the design in 2003 so I'll probably pick some later ones up soon, save anymore problems with the current ones.
Need to have a nip to the main dealers at some point too, there was a recall on the heated seats, so need to see if that's been done, hopefully it hasn't because the driver's seat doesn't heat up atm so if the recall is outstanding, it'll be getting fixed for free
