only classed as a catergory write off it the repairs were un-economical
ie- repairs cost more than the cars market value
in this case, this car on the open market sells for £3.5million, repairs are £900k its more economical for the insurer to repair it...not write it off

Remember reading about it, the guy was awaiting drug and rape charges. Either way he stacked it and along with 2 others, died in the fire.
Edit - More info - http://www.theregister.co.uk/1999/03/22/micromuse_founder_killed_in_f1/. The McLaren was #17 apparently.
