stop driving it! if the oil pump has packed in, driving without oil pressure will ruin the engine. is it a loud tapping noise your hearing?

I had this problem in my old Astra with a 1.6 8v. It started off being a bit tappy when hot, then the oil light started coming on very faintly, then it came on constantly.

I took the sump off and found the pick-up was blocked right up. So cleaned that off and put back together.

Was fine for about a day, then it did it again, ended up driving a couple of miles with the light on to get home.

So fitted another oil pump with new gaskets and a 4th oil change, after that it was spot on.

Sadly, a few days later, got a nasty bottom end knock:

Managed to pick up a mk4 Astra before it threw a rod out the block, and eventually scrapped it!

So I really hope you've not done any damage by driving it!

I got through 30 litres of oil that month

As mentioned drop the sump down and see if anything has gone wrong,if you do find the pick up pipe blocked then clean it off and fit everything back together and try your luck.
If it sounds the same check around the cam for oil movement if none then you looking at oil pump failure.
