I'm using an Alpine W530BT head unit which came with a microphone which I've wired into my A Pillar for hands free/bluetooth.
I admit that I don't drive the quietest car on the road, but the mic is useless according to the people I've had hands free calls with. Is there any value in replacing the microphone with a 3rd party one, or are they all just "dumb" devices with the headunit doing the actual work like sound deadening etc?

Move it to near rear view mirror. I had my Pioneer one top of A pillar same issue. So brought it out via the courtesy light.

Hmmm I didn't think of that. I may do some testing tomorrow between decorating and taking stuff to the tip.
Got my Grandad round to help out so he can help me test, but his hearing aid adds an extra factor

On my ST the Mic was on the A pillar and it was ok. It road noise effected it a lot. In the BMW its near the rest view mirror and its a lot better, appreciate there's probably a bit more to it than being in a different location but seemed to help.
