Put it on rentation, print this form: http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_069390.pdf and send it off to DVLA costs from £105.

They will auto assign the old reg back unless for some reason they can't and they will just assign it a new one.

It costs £105 to put it on retention and if you've not sold it in 12 months you've got to pay about £25 to keep it on retention. Can't really see it being worth the effort for a plate like that, it's probably only worth a ton tops.
