Yup, i suspect this is a cross between Sonar and reverberation time testing.
But i'm struggling to find an actual use for it and the examples given are pretty weak - measurement, you'd use lasers which are far more accurate; acoustic building design, any acoustician worth their weight would already have a good idea on design and they'd use computer models for testing and forensics would hugely depend on the quality of audio.
