Yep. Protected my full no claims 3 weeks before I wrote my old Corsa off. Best £20(ish) I ever spent.

Yes, my dad got stung a few years back, he had a none fault bump but the other party put some dodgy witness statements in which meant it went 50/50. He lost 4 years ncb plus obviously had a claim to declare so his premium shot up.

I was talkin about this with the wife today. I've had mine protected for years now but luckily never used it.
If you have an accident do you still have to declare it on a new policy??? I guess you do but this is where I don't understand the no claims bit, surely the renewal quote will still go up???

You get to keep your no claims but declare the claim. So yes it does go up

I don't bother because they ask about claims and accidents in the last 5 years anyway.

The NCB is basically a percentage discount off your overall premium, if you have an accident, yes you have to declare it and therefore there will be a higher premium but without protected no claims, you also lose the discount (or at least drop to a lower percentage) meaning you pay more again. I think some companies do upto 75% no claims discount so losing that on a £500 premium turns it into a £2000 premium, which is considerably more of a kick in the stones than a £50 increase for a minor claim.

I don't, and I've got over ten years NCB. A bit off topic but the renewal goes up every year, if you stay with the same company, which pisses me off. So you have to ring around and use the sites. I don't see how they're not gonna stick it up loads, just because you've made a claim, I know it might not be as much, but they just take the piss.
