I'm thinking about getting rid of the current Ibiza and getting something a little newer and comfier. Only issue is, I am doing 500 miles to work a week and I am getting just over 60mpg while doing around 75mph so I would still like to see somewhere near that figure but also retain some performance, mine is around 175bhp and 280 lb/ft

So it needs to be Fiesta/Focus sized
Diesel
Over 55 mpg in real life
Not dog slow
Reliable
No older than 2004
Max of 7,000 (not a penny more)

Obvious choice would be the VAG Mk5 Golf platform, but the 2.0 diesels don't seem to get near the MPG figures that the 1.9s do

Was going to say a new merc a class but then saw the budget

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Mine gets roughly 45mpg in real life, pretty much with any style of driving. Got 55 going down to Newcastle and back. Basically you won't get anywhere near 55mpg unless you're doing long runs.

Keep your current car if it works.

Another newer car won't be that much comfier.

But, you could get a tidy Focus TDCi with newer 1.6 engine for that sort of money imho, and new than that Golf.

My drive to work is 50 miles in total, with about 48 of it on dual carriageway or motorways hence the high figures I get.

The reason I want to get rid is because it is getting on a bit, too many nigglily faults doing my head in and its stiff and noisey without actually being any good round the bends

I like them, but MPG is very poor on them, most struggle to get 50 out of them!

imho, if you want a bigger car achieving high MPG it will be boring.

The reason your car gets good MPG is partly due to the size.

An Astra with the 150 engine would not be a kick in the arse away from the 55mpg you're looking for then. I like mine, they're good engines.
