Is there anyway of telling from a hpi or something similar if the engine is an 8 valve or 16 valve? Can you tell from the chassis number on the hpi etc?

There is a MK2 GTI I want to go and look at and have asked the seller which engine it is , but is taking ages as most of thier stock is £50k plus so I don't think selling a golf is high on his list at the moment!

For future reference, an online parts supplier like ECP etc would come in handy for this sort of search.
