Looking for a car for my girlfriend, found a decent one cheap enough, around 100 miles away.

She currently has a courtesy car as her car was written off, and it has to go back on Friday. She needs a car for work, so need to get this new car by then.

Problem is, the V5 is currently away at the DVLA having a private plate removed.

Recommendations for this? Just write up a receipt and have the seller forward the tax disc & V5 once it arrives back?

Ive always wondered this.

During the plate change, at what point does it take affect??

Like say you bought the car, when would the old plate need to go back on?? So many days after the DVLA have processed it etc??

It goes back on as soon as you receive the V5 and new tax disc. Remember and tell your insurance as well.

I've done this a few times with my own car but would be wary if I hadn't ever seen the original v5 when buying.

But how will the DVLA know exactly when you are going to receive the documents??

Dosn't sound like it gives the owner much leeway.

Although you should technically put it on straight away, if your tax, reg that's displayed on the car, and insurance matches, there's no chance anything will happen if you explain what's going on and it's a couple/few days.

The police are pretty lenient if you tell them the situation. Plus it helps if you have a receipt of sale on you as well.
