I simply do not understand why people do this, I really don't. For example, Facebook, Instagram etc scrolling through profiles, people have photos of themselves on there, and there's always one or two pictures with them in the picture doing a 'selfie' as I say, and sticking their middle finger up in the shot!

Is there any real reason for this? Or is it some 'I'm a bad ass' notion type thing? Or is it a 'fuck the world' 'fuck the system' type message they're portraying for that one moment

Just don't really get it.

Having said that, I think it derives from the americanisms we seem to pick up. This is like the way rappers say 'peace' backwards to effectively tell you to fuck off.

It's to get over the awkwardness of taking a picture of yourself I reckon, so that you don't look too serious or something. Not saying it makes sense but it just means you're not standing there with your other arm floating about or weirdly stuffed in a pocket or similar.

I stick my middle finger up when people take pictures of other people, like a photobomb.

Missus was looking at photos from a few years ago and noticed I had done it then. I lol'd, she wasn't impressed.
