I have an orbitsound I bought second hand a year ago or so, pretty good has a separate sub and the later ones have bluetooth I think it's the m12.

What's difference to the ear? When I saw the demo it sounded like the sound was coming from all over

You'll hear a clear difference between actual surround and virtual surround. More so in your home than in a controlled demo setup.
The level of detail and the general perception of sound coming from behind you is much greater with separate speakers.
This is because sound, quite literally, is coming from behind you.
I'm not saying a soundbar is never a good solution, but at £1400 a 5.1 setup would beat the shit out of a soundbar every time. No matter how many speakers it supposedly simulates.

It's worth noting that the people demoing soundbars probably know exactly what their weaknesses are and choose the demoed soundtracks accordingly.

This. You need to have a controlled room (wall surfaces play a huge part) and decent positioning for 'virtual surround' to actually offer any surround sound (even then imaging is cack compared to a proper setup) like qualities, otherwise you just end up with a mush of delayed audio bouncing around.

I'm going to go for a Sonos Playbar then add a wireless sub down the line. No point getting a sub at the moment as living in a flat it isn't fair to neighbours below.

As Rob pointed out, this is a good reason not to pay the premium for a Sonos setup.
It seems like the entire setup (e.g. no DTS, optical over HDMI etc) is very old fashioned and not in line with modern AV setups.
Sonos do some great things when it comes to streaming music, but it seems like they weren't fully prepared when they ventured in to AV.

It is a glaring omission, but I'd still buy one - cos I don't own any Blurays; I stream all my stuff on Apple TV / Netflix - both of which output Dolby Digital.

There's some issues with Dolby Digital Plus and Netflix as well, but I'm not sure if they concern the Apple TV!?
The mere fact that they've refused to fix the issue and are giving half assed explanations about how the product is intended to be used is enough that I'm steering well clear.
It's a shame really, as all it needs is a few HDMI inputs and support for all major formats and it'd be a fantastic solution.
