It's night and day in terms of performance from a 330-320. Deffinatley worth the hunt for a manual.

330d manual are pretty damn fast! Just keep pulling and pulling. Although the fuel economy is a lot worse than a 320d.

With a diesel I would not bother with a manual? Short power band =changing gear an awful lot. Not really race car style, and the torque converter will give you a bit extra torque low down

il be after remapping it and iv read the auto boxes dont take to the extra power too well. think il hold out for a 330D manual as hard to find as they are!

Didn't say there was anything wrong with one, but given it's a BM and I've driven the auto 330 E46 on a regular basis I would 100% prefer the smith auto as it suits the character of the car so if they are that rare I wouldn't bother holding out, there's a reason most are autos!

I've driven a 330 auto, although not for long, and the box was terrible.
A quick google suggests that one daymoon has mentioned is the same one used in the 986, which is renowned as being terrible.

auto box is terrible. Manual is perfectly acceptable on a 330. They don't have a 300rpm power range like small Diesel engines.

I meant reliability.
I driven a 530i with auto gearbox for a week and I preferred manual tbh.

If it's the same Gbox as in an E39 530i then we've had two and a total of about 80-90k between the two with no issues. But never knew they had a bad rep!

yea same box(came on facelift E39's)
I think there is GM and ZF, one being more shit than other
Depends how they are driven as well though, they don't take abuse very well.
BMW claim gearbox oil is lifetime but many people having issues replace oil and filter and issues disappear.

both e39's i had, had gearbox problems and required rebuilds 530i & 540i
but they are a good smooth box perfect for the sort of car they are fitted too

Also changed a parking sensor so they're now all working.
Need to sort out the front grills as someone has cable-tied them on but can't decide whether to keep them black or get standard ones.

My 2002 330Ci has the auto box and i've had it from 65,000 miles, its now got just short of 100,000 and it feels as good as it ever did. I may well get the transmission and diff oil changed soon just to keep it sweet.
