my mrs has 2 cars atm, a seat ibiza cupra and a mr2 roadster..

she wants to get rid of both and have a good single car to use.. (and it means i can get my garage back)

so she wants something which fits all of the below..


40+ mpg
5 doors
reliable
lots of extras like climate control etc
looks nice
below £8000

seen some mazda3's which are on the top o her wishlist atm.

Mazda3 2.2d Sport would be my recommendation if that's what she likes the look of.

The engine is good, had mine in 185PS trim (in a Mazda6 admittedly, but it's the same) for 3 1/2 years without any issues. Pulled strongly and returned 40mpg+ easily. The lower power outputs return higher economy figures seemingly.
A colleague has the 1.6d version, and says that its great on fuel. but lacks a bit of power. The 2.2d comes in 150 & 180/185PS offerings.

Mazda3 Sport trims come with high levels of equipment too.
My experience of them (now on my second Mazda6 Sport after considering many alternatives) is that they will come with much more equipment as standard than any of the German offerings.

Mk2 Leon FR facelift. Comes with a load of extras as standard and looks great. Pretty quick for a diesel.
