if you don't know how it probably isn't a good idea, since if it goes wrong it could cost you a fortune to sort out.
if you have a 1.4 or 1.6 16v lump you need to replace the pulleys too.
the idea seems simple enough, but i've never attempted it

If you need to ask pay someone. Ask them if they mind showing you how, so you can do it next time. There is little margin for error with them.

yea i'm gettin' mine done soon.
the kit costs 75£ from autovaux.
u don't really wanna mess around with the timing belt if u haven't done one before.
I'm just gonna watch and learn while they change mine.

agh 8vs are easy.......
turn engine by hand marking up/ailging(sp) all timing marks, slacked the water pump retaining bolts enough so that you can move the pump around(its the tensioner on 8vs) this sh ould make the belt slack so you can take it off. take out water pump - your better off chucking new one in too as vauxs water pumps tend to break once theyve been slackened. fit water pump with new gasket and nip bolts up. fit new belt. making sure before you put belt on the timing marks are BANG on. once belt is on and timings PERFECT adjust the water pump till belts tight enough, (should only be able to turn it 90degrees and it should be pretty tough doing that too) tighten water pump bolts right up. turn engine over by hand a few times, then start it.
obviously youll have drained water before you piss about with water pump and filled water back up before you start car
and turning the car over by hand should be quite hard work if belts tight enouigh - but make sure belts not too tight.
you'll also have to take off fan belt for access to water pump
thats just a guide so if u fuck it up its your fault and its very easy to mess up...

because years ago cars cooling fans were running all the time via this belt. the alternator belt ran to the fan, thus making the fan spin round with the cars RPM. not good on cold winter day as the colling fan is still cooling the coolant even if it is cold!
