about to get a smal sub this week, my mate says that in his car the sub and 6x9s work against each other and fight for air so it sounds crap? i dont know if this will be the case in my car but if it is, would adding a port or 2 in the shelf help at all?

cheers

can this be achieved just from the EQ settings on my HU or would this need to be done via an amp?

u can do it by putting the gain or bass boost up on the amp (if it has it - most good ones do..) that's drivin the sub - and just leave the head unit on low bass - or whatever setting u like. i am running 2 6x9's in the back and use them for mid and high frequency, with a sony 12"p5 sub underneath em.. but i have my 6X9's runnin from 1 side of an 800watt amp - 200watts goin to each speaker.

perhaps his speakers are out of phase? i agree it sounds crap though, when my sub is in the car i just unplug the 6x9's and plug em back in when i take it out ( which i do quite a lot).

i have no bass goin to my 6x9's have em runnin on the HPF of the crossover on one side of the amp so i don't need to unplug em - if ya have the 6x9's runnin from the head unit, i can understand why u would wanna disconnect em.
