I'll shortly be moving into a role that looks after and manages a large number of projects, all of which 3 stages, Design, Build and Installation.
Most projects will take a number of months to continue.

Im looking for some software to help me track the project dates and plan ahead accordingly.

Ideally, looking for something simple.

Before I go ahead and install Microsoft project, is there anything else that might be suitable / easier to use?

Primavera is the shiz, but not something simple like you're after.

Roll your own solution in Excel?

Or some new fangled web-based service like this?

Microsoft Project is about as simple to use as you'll find, but it lacks a lot of features. Primavera isn't too hard to use if you're just looking to track milestones... You'll also come across issues if your Project Controls team are using primavera and you're using MSP.

Excel Spreadsheet would be the best choice as Rob said. I rarely use anything other than excel for tracking resources/milestones

MS Project would be more than adequate for what you need.

Excel for me.

Simplicity being the way forward, rather than me having to learn it all over every time I want to make changes.

Perhaps if I was planning projects day in day out I'd find a better solution but otherwise happy to sit in Excel colouring in boxes

Been using project for a month, its a little overkill.

Freedcamp suits me perfectly.

I use Basecamp in another work environment and starting to get used to that one.
