I know a petrolhead copper. He's had all sorts of hot hatches with modified engines and/or transplants so I'm quite sure he would have known what to look for.
If a copper had identified a 1.6 in a 1.4 for example, I'd be much more impressed/skeptical.
Also there's the chance that the car was locally "known" and they just waited for a reason to pull you and get it impounded.

Hope they crush it. Why should everyone else pay and not you. If your going do a transplant do it properly that includes the paperwork involved.
