I know some of these are rustbuckets, I used to have one. Some may remember me posting pics of it.
I'm now 30 and need a project to keep me out of the boozer etc. I thought as i've had one and enjoyed driving the thing and know some of the associated problems it would be a good start.
Take one ok-ish GTI spec. Add de-linked suspension, bigger brakes and a 1.8vvc engine for a right hoot.
But, it seems the price has gone a bit crazy......
There are a few knocking about, one is being advertised for 3K!!!!!!
Seems it may not be such a cheap project......

Plenty of other options aswell. How about an RS Clio or something if you are looking for a cheap hoot.

Clio Sport 172/182 can be had for decent money and aren't the earth to insure/run either

I had a look at the clios on e-bay the other day. I remember when they used to fetch good money!
That could be an option. Or do I go with what I know and build another XE.....

182 is one of the best cars I have ever driven. Not much out there for equivalent cost for the smiles per miles really.
Excellent chassis and delightful steering.

Id go with the metro and 18vvc over a 182. Mate has a rover with a 180 vvc and it can fairly shift. Death trap is right tho but be a fun one.
172/182 i wouldnt rate highly. Maybe if you going to use on track it would handle a lot better but they are far slower than 18 metro and also slower than a xe corsa

I'd also like to get into the restoration side of things. So was looking at older and cheaper cars.
The metro's are few and far between, but parts are dirt cheap.
How about the Clios? Parts cost etc?

you can pick clio parts up quite cheap second hand ones. now a days loads of people breaking them for parts

No doubt the Metro has a bit of a classic/cool thing but it is essentially a metro...
Corsa XE would be good for mod/resto. A nice "factory" build would be good.

mate has a metro with a 2.0 turbo out of a rover 75 as he blew last 3 1.8vvc engines fast as tho

Been thinking about it, the donor car is cheap. Engines aren't too badly priced.

Yup just a clean sport shell, nice clean XE all painted up. Install with airbox and no fancy colours. Will look like a factory made one

Don't consider a 182 Cup if you want something cheap to modify though, my suspension was a grand and it's not a brand I wen really wanted!
