....It'll probably be a flood damaged car too or a re-shell job.

There is no valid VIC marker against it... Last ownership change on the car was 22nd June 2014.

How to check whether the car has passed its identity check

When a car is written off, it's given a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) marker by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). It must pass a VIC and have the marker removed before it can go back on the road. This applies to category A, B and C write offs.

That's from the Citizens' Advice website.

I always believed A couldn't even be broken, the lot had to get scrapped and B could be broken but the shell must be scrapped, the above does seem to contradict that though.

Personally I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, purely because when you come to sell it, there's clearly a lack of belief that it should exist.

Seen it a few times where you get a second hand shell and the resulting car has a SABTVRO VIN number and the marker remains because you've used a majority of parts.

Also that guy on the Lancer register posting in caps hasn't spent as long in salvage as he probably needs to - the categorisations are nothing to do with whether it needs jigging. In fact once you've had a few you tend to see it as a bit of a lottery based on who inspected it.

I've had serious D and non-serious C.

And Mike is quite right - even if you can do it - it'll be a bitch to move on when the time comes. Loophole or otherwise, you narrow down the number of people willing to buy by a significant margin.

Would you trust anyone that links to a random forum post as evidence to support a sale involving 13ks worth of goods.

The loophole bit gets me as well. Its not a loophole, its a process you've got to go through and when they're convinced what you're saying is true, they'll register the car.

Shame that VIN lookup thing I had stopped working, used that to look up all the FRPs and there are a few SABTVRO in there, I'd suspect that Focus has undergone a similar thing.

Cat b can't be put back on road . It's for destruction of spares (shell must be crushed) logbook is generally held by dvla . You can re shell the cat b and get it back on the road but it must have the vin of the shell your using and the v5 and then go through a check . It also won't be plated any newer than the shell . There used to be a big loophole getting cat b back on road but that's long finished.

In fact - I need something like this - is it paid? Could do with getting VIN/engine/reg date as well if they offer it.

Just to confirm, this car has undergone a VIC Check with the DVLA and passed therefore it is fully road worthy.

A VIC check doesn't check to see if the car is road worthy.

Going on that Paul it's not even got a market against it? It wouldn't surprise me if they have put some phoney plates on for advertising it. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole

That's the not full report I don't think, the marker is in the earlier one, presumably from further down the same data.

Under theft indicator ? Why not cat x ? I bet someone has tried cloning it or something dodgy for it to be down for braking . Wonder if it's possible to find who insured it ? Either way there is something dodgy about it
