Malmaison is up there, not sure it's especially cheap though. Hilton have a Doubletree there too, there's a Mercure right next to the gardens and a Thistle.
I stopped in the Macdonald recently which was nice and under £100 with breakfast, probably 5 min walk from Picadilly.

Whats the nearest Travelodge? Usually pretty cheap but Saturday's are always more expensive.

Yeah if United are at home or there is something on at the M.e.n then prices are through the roof.

As Piccadilly has many lines into it, why not look to visit a local freind and just grab and early morning train?

Have tickets for Warehouse project, so the room be used between 6am and checkout - then followed by lunch and watch the FOOOOOTBALLLL, catching a 4pm train home.

There is plenty of alright places on booking.com for less than 135 but not by much. Depends how cheap you want.

+1 for Double Tree - you get a warm cookie on arrival. That pretty much does it for me.

http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/booking/rates.shtml?packId=17712751938 - if that works.
If not there's an Ibis/Accor hotel at the junction of Pollard Street and Ancoats Street behind Piccadilly Station, 3-4 mins walk from Warehouse project.
