I get more mpg with 97ron and vpower diesel, slightly better pick up in the Beemer but nothing epic.

Swings and roundabouts tbh. I'll keep on using it for as long as I have the Skoda.

The MPG thing really does seem to me like people make up their mind that the car is going to return better figures then go out and "test" it even though the test conditions are poor.

If the engine's been designed to run on super, use it. If it hasn't, don't. A boggo hatchback with a sticker on the back of it will run just fine on regular fuel.

Which applies to the VXR?

No engines are designed to run on super-unleaded.. Its how its been mapped.

And just because its been mapped to take advantage of high octane fuel (i.e. it can advance out the timing) that doesn't mean running it on 95RON is any less safe.. ECU's are pretty intelligent these days!

Pretty sure most supercar manufacturers would disagree.

I'd say the compression ratio was more to do with engine design than the fuel map myself.
