Personally I'd prefer an x5

The engine and boxes on these are tougher than chuck Norris, its the X5 that's got a Chocolate gearbox Pow

The only weak point in the merc boxes is the fact they take a decade to chagne gear and the conductor plates can fail (relatively cheap fix though).

Much, much, much more reliable than the X5.. Just as crap off road and very dated looking.

Looks dated now though

The W163 has got coils on the rear.. The do however like to go snap.. Cheap to replace though.

Jambo: find a tidy low-mileage example, as late as possible and assuming you don't mind staring at plastic that looks like its from the 90's you'll love it.

You got one yet Jambo? I just did a deal with a guy who wanted my Viano and I've now got a W164 ML320 CDI Sport ... Its an early one (2006) and I was a little nervous that it will have a typical rough as a badgers arse 7G box but its been pretty good so far ..

The w163 looks dated and the interior is vile by comparison.. But they feel bullet proof!.. The old 722.5 gearboxes on the w163's are almost indestructible and the 5 pot 270 lump can go for ever..

I tell you what is shit on the w164, the lack of gear sick!

Its stupid that's what it is!

And there are paddle type things on the back of the wheel but each paddle can do up or down (outer side does up, inner side does down).. Why it couldn't just be right=up and left=down god knows!
