I never have and still do not see the point in an expensive engagement ring or wedding day.
The engagement is fleeting and once married, it's over, so it seems strange to me for the engagement ring to be more costly than the wedding ring.
The wedding day is even more fleeting, so why spend more on that than things like honeymoon, home, cars etc.
Surely better sense to invest in one's marriage, rather than one's wedding, a single stress filled day.

If I ever propose, I have no idea what I will be spending. I mean ffs £300 is my disposable income every month after all bills, fuel, food etc.
Assuming I could save £150/month (which would not be possible) I'd be looking at 40 months to save up 3 x my gross monthly salary 
Spend what you can afford.
