Cheers all, some good suggestions.

I'm now in a couple of FB groups - and I'm finding ebay much better for cars in this price bracket than AT/PH.

Got a couple of EP3 contenders relatively local, may check them out this weekend if still available.

Road Tax is not cheap but these cost nothing to buy at the moment.

What spec/trim should I look for?

Ideally a Thunder if you can find a good cheap one.
Leather come as standard on this model.

Don't buy a puma for Christ sake. Will be rotten as fuck. And nowhere near as fun as a clio 1*2.

And leather seats is the worst thing he wants if he's wanting a fun car to chuck about, they have no side support at all. Just slide off them. Stick to trying to fix your dpf.

Mini Cooper S? Ideally a facelift (54-06 plate) would fit the bill as something fun, and they aren't too bad on fuel. I loved mine and wish I kept it. Might struggle getting a facelift for near £2k though, unless it's rough with high miles

Mx5s are great cars, wish I still had mine.

Mk2.5 vt sport is the one you want.

For a dirt cheap fun car, I'd go for Puma too.
Get one with fresh MOT, and drive it into the ground
They're not the fastest, but has fun handling as standard.
It's so much easier to own when you don't give a shit about it. Park it into walls etc

Scrap it/part ex it when it's time to swap

Seems to me the best choice by far is your first idea of a Clio 182, still look reasonably modern with a few creature comforts and a good fun drive by all accounts.

I wouldn't want to be commuting any distance in some old Puma or the like and that is from someone who has used a Corsa B as a daily on the odd week when my TT was off the road and trust me...the appeal very quickly wears off

Coming from someone who has owned a Puma 1.7 and a FF Clio 182. Get a Clio without doubt. Worlds apart.

I'd look for a decent 172 cup tbh. Prices seem to be creeping up whereas 182s are dropping.

I got my EP3 did the brakes with handling mods and its bloody fantastic. Granted looking to sell it in the new year for a normal family car but I wish I could keep it as it is fantastic on track

Got a vague plan tomorrow. Got a 182 for sale which I quite like the look of, in RB. Then got an EP3 which has got moon miles, but is cheap.

As a wildcard, I'm also off to SEAT to test drive a new Leon Cupra 290. Found a decent lease deal on one, so may sell my soul and go that route...
