Is there anyway to find out what damage was recorded for a cat d car? Would a hpi check show this.

No just the date, from which you can work out the value at the time and how bad it would have needed to be to write it off.

Thanks Ian, it was for the above car, dealer mentions so minor panel damage, based on the price, it would lead me to believe it was something more serious.

It can also be labour cost that can write off a car. The garage the insurance company used might have charged £100 an hour labour whereas if they had used a body shop that charges £50 an hour it may not have been written off.

That's my twopenneth anyway.

If its 8 grand now what's a straight one? 10 grand? So it would need 5 grand and that's if it happened this week. If it was a few years ago, forget it, you're in to 6/7/8 grand of quote, that's not a headlight and a smart repair on the wing.

Edit although having said that I have a mate with an E class who took it to Merc for a little mark over the rear arch and that cost the other party's insurer (therefore me and everyone else ) a little over 4000 quid.

So yeah, could be a an expensive scratch or it could have been more. Still need to know the date really. Could have been in 2010 and then you're talking something more serious.

Damage claims are easy to exaggerate. I do the damage claims as part of my job for new Vauxhall vehicles delivered from factory and the Labour times for painting are very favourable.

The only way to find out is to find the garage that done the repair and get the report. Finding the garage will be hard tho.

You can gauge the level of damage by working out the rough value when it was repaired.

A £1,500 car only needs to be keyed badly to be CAT D or lightly accident damaged to be CAT C where as a £40,000 car will need to be smashed to oblivion to be CAT C

Just looked at the Pics.. That's had a hard hit in the front and possible rear end too.. Looks like a shitty repair.

Shut lines on the front of the drivers door and rear of the rear door on drivers side look different to the rest. Side impact maybe?
