Thought I would ask opinions of this on here as there is a selection of people some of which have a good hand in the world of the internet.

I summary a social media personality approached Litchfield tuning company as said give me 25k and do the work on my car for free for some exposure on my channel. Quite rightly that said no

I think I share the opinion of this chap. (plus video shows what was posted etc)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjY1xmMoy2k

On one hand it is kind of a private conversation with the company and the would be customer, if you can call them that....
Chris apart from been a friend of Litchfield had kind of just come along and stirred the pot and I know from previous articles he is not a fan of the social media "influencers" and is more of an old fashioned journalist. Likes the truth to be told and not biased. I mean if you are getting discounts in turn for exposure you are hardly going to be harsh.
But if Chris is a friend of the company he himself could be biased....

On the other side I do feel that is a very cheeky thing to do (assuming it is true) Not even just asking for free stuff but payment too
Dont think they have lost out though as they have been named so will therefore get even more views and exposure from this scandle. If you are thick skinned enough its no issue to them

My first thoughts is that guy you've linked is only regurgitating content from the Chris Harris podcast but on his own monetised channel with a load of affiliate links in the description.

You might consider that slightly hypocritical given the apparent disdain for using YT exposure for personal gain but then using that topic to do exactly that.

I'd certainly rather hear the story from Chris or someone from Litchfield, or the "buyer" themselves - if its Mr JWW then they're not unknown as some in the comments have suggested - that's quite a big channel.

Ultimately its only business - and the retailer has the opportunity to say no.

Some might consider it good business, if you get the 25 grand back in new revenue.

Whether it would get Litchfield their money back, they obviously disagree. I can see how a newer company might benefit. Does seem slightly expensive just for exposure on a Youtube video but the figures for me are largely immaterial - its either good for the business or its not.

Even if it causes businesses to lose money because they don't get their investment back that doesn't offend me either, how they spend their advertising budget is down to them. The wise businesses are growing their own channels so as not to be at the call of third parties if they want the exposure but no one is being forced to join in. I don't think its quite such a powerful platform that its engage or die just yet.

Although as for the future - who knows - not all the dissimilar to forums years ago where you'd get someone who becomes to go-to-guy for a particular job and the whole forum recommends them and only them and people drive for hundreds of miles to use them when there are perfectly good offline businesses locally.

No different to that for me - as a decision maker you can either beat them, join them or carry on as you are, its all just business.

Also not cheeky - its business.

Also do you not think the original Harris tweet was actually an advert for Litchfield. Perhaps giving Harris the 5 grand was cheaper than giving JWW 25 for a similar level of exposure.

In fact that detailer guy has annoyed me with all his algorithm tricks - community tab, pinned his own post, responding to negative stuff to make the conversation longer etc.

He's growing his own channel - fine - but calling people out for using this tech for gain when actually what is his motivation?

I've said its not cheeky but I'll review that - this detailer guy is a complete hypocrit

Also worth reading some of the comments in the JWW Yaris video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmvOn1k_26o

I find it quite funny that people are giving the Youtuber shit for his business practices but actually just viewing the video and because they're engaging with him the YT algo will promote his stuff to yet more people.

The wise money would be staying silent if you really wanted to make a point. These people moaning are actually just pawns in the game. Not sure there are any losers here.

Litchfied - look good by saying no

Harris - looks good by taking the ethical position

JWW - gets more views meaning he'll have a better position from which to do deals in the future.

Toyota - cars get larger exposure.

Who is being taken advantage of?? The complainers who can't work out when to be quiet.

Absolutely no such thing as bad publicity, don't need to be in 2021 to know that, I'm sure that phrase pre-dates this tech but it has taken on a whole new level of ridiculousness when the complaints are directly being turned in to money

Was that the collecting cars one?

Listened to it on my lunch break today, I can see why Litchfield said no as the numbers just dont stack up on a low volume car.
Didn't realise youtubers had agents until listening to that, clearly its a much bigger game then I first thought

I fully agree that there is no such thing as bad publicity. I watched one the JJB videos to see who he was. Unwittingly not realising I was contributing to his viewing figures. Bet a load of other people did it too.

I think you can also end up taking sides without knowing. I know the detailing chap and find him an all round nice bloke. But then a fresh face such as yourself sees it and takes it at face value.

There would be no way of ever knowing the statistics as its all personal information but I wonder how many channels involve discounts of some description on the products they showcase.

I don't dislike the detailing guy, in fact since the replies here we had a few comments back and forward on the video and he was good enough to give me a civil reply despite me taking the piss a bit.

I do think everyone is at it though - it might look to some like something to chill out and watch videos but for many, dare I say the majority of producers it is sheer business.

That forensic detailing is a fucking yawn fest. Loves the sound of his own voice and enjoys watching his own eyes pop out his head

Sounds like what my Mrs says Had it casting to the TV the other night whilst I was doing some other bits and bobs. She heard his voice and stated he is the most boring man in the world. Each to their own as this is coming from someone that has a fascination with watching Celebrity lifestyle blogs were there is some women I have never heard of telling the world about how traumatic her last trip to Waitrose was

Saying that I have other deeply nerdy interests in railways etc so watch many things on youtube others would fall asleep to
Has certainly opened my eyes as to how much money and business is involved in it all. Until recently I assumed it was just people with a camera and a laptop making videos and earning just a couple of quid out of it.

Exactly that mate, each to their own. I know most of the lads on the detailing pages on facebook rated him, but I had to leave those groups aswell because I realised I wasn't into car cleaning after all.

There is a shit load of money to be made out of making YouTube videos, some of these Youtubers are shit hot and earn every penny however, and call me a cunt, many of them are stealing a living. Youtubers standing at entrances to car shows filming cars coming and going, and crack dealers letting some Youtubers drive their motors around for 5 minutes of fame, for example. The common denominator is the viewer
