because it alters the mph per 1000 rpm. for instance my bro ahs the same corsa as me 1.5 td, in 5th at 3k revs mine is at 75 mph, his is at 60. i have 17's hes got 14's. now i know the speedo will be reading slightly wrong, but mine is going quicker than his at the same revs.

its the diameter
17 can turn more than 14's
14's will be fully spun up as it where while 17's because of larger diameter will go a bit more.......

if u understand me.........

the rolling radius of a 205 40 17 tyre is more than a 165/65/14 tyre. hence for one turn of the wheel the 205 will travel further

yes, but the weight of the wheel generally cancels this out (ie engine is having to work harder to turn the 17's)

doesnt really effect my car too much cos of the torque

infact i didnt really notice much of an acceleration difference either apart from it goes quicker in each gear now.

17's lowered 60mm has more ground clearence then one dropped 35mm on standard alloys

Unless you're guessing thos speeds, you and your brother must have different gearboxes.

Its true what you say, if you put 17"s on it alters the distance the car moves per turn of the wheel, but this isnt corrected by the speedo, as the speed the dials indicate is worked out by the rotaion of the gearbox, and the rolling circumference is taken into account. If you put 17"s on you throw this calculation out, so it under-reads the speed you're going.

Also the bigger the size of the wheel, the bigger the mass of the wheel. The bigger the mass of the wheel, the more power is lost throught the transmission, and so youve got less power going onto the road.
