I'd rather pay the £150 to get the belt changed before it happens
I stick to the Haynes recommended cam belt change interval (bout 3/4 of the manufacturers), then u'll be safe. A properly fitted cambelt (inside the belt cover), and regularly expected wont let you down.
Well unless some 1 fiddles with it at some point, and doesnt tighten/fit it back properly.
I check mine all the time, even on my TD which is a night mare to get to.
Nevertheless - unlucky mate - hope it hasnt caused too much damage

As said, a secondhand head might be the best option.
£620 with a big discount! Doesn't sound discounted to me.....
Valves are about £15 each, not £30.

For the cost of 16 new valves and a head from vaux you could buy a whole new used engine.
