i have got an old pc that i have cobbled out of bits i had lying about - my dad is giving it to a mates son so he can do word processing on it but... the bastard thing wont install any operating system - with 98 it boots from the cd and gets to the bit where it should be copying files and it just goes insert the cd, which is already inserted and it has booted from, so it can deffo see the cd rom (i have tried an old one and a new one and the results are the same) when i tried windows xp it wont boot from the cd, it says boot code error 5 and wont boot, i downloaded and made all 6 disks of xp bootdisk and even then when it got ot the bit where it copies the files accross it went cannot find file blah blah.)
this is reallly getting on my tits now - i have swapped the ide cables about and rest the cmos and checked that all the bits work in other computers - i know its old but it shud stil work and i am sure that i have installed xp on it b4.
anyone got any ideas as to what the hell is going on here?
your help greatly appreciated

yeah - i have - with the xp bootdisks it does all the setup up to the point of copying files - this includes formatting it up ntfs style and stuff, but then as soon as it goes to copy it dosnt work - the same is tru for 98 althought it boots from the cd and if i boot into dos mode i can read all the stuff off the cd drive too, this is why i cant understand it

What RAM is in the machine? Is it a few sticks just lobbed in? Try the sticks one at a time to see if you have a bad one. I had exactly the same problems when I had a bad stick.

there is only one stick and it seems to work in another machine fine - i have managed to get 98 onto the machine now by copying accross the cabs directory in dos (got to by booting from the 98 cd and then choosing boot computer with cd rom support) but i only have office 2003 and that dont work in 98 so i am still stuck - lol
i dunno - when it rains it poors i suppose.
the ide is all as u suggest mjw and as for the 98 boot disk - xp setup cannot be run from dos - so it tells me
cheers for the efforts tho guys and any futher suggestions wud be great

Try running the XP setup like this,
Boot with the win 98 boot disk, make sure smart drive is running as it will speed the file copy up, other whys it will be unbearable!
Then goto X:\I386\WINNT.EXE
(X IS WHATEVER YOUR CD DRIVE LETTER IS.)

hmmm, get cdr101 error - any clues - the net seems to suggest cd rom failure but how did i get 98 onto it then? - is it possible that the cd rom could just be slightly fooked so that it works enuff to copy files over in dos but not well enuff to do anything else?

BIOS versions can cause problems with XP, I couldn't use the keyboard on XP setup once because the BIOS version wasn't supported!!That caused me a headache for a while!
