Has anyone done any mods the red top engine apart from the usual induction kit,exhaust and chip?
Mine is chipped,induction and exhaust at mow and am just considering doing some more mods.
Was thinking of throttle bodies,engine management,proper high lift cams and ajustable cam pullies.
Has anyone done any of these mods,what was out come,worth money?

change the thermo to run at a temp nearer the otimum,
high life cams,
breather mod to the rocker cover,
take a look and the regal or corney page in total vaux, or give them a ring.

depends on your budget

Greg - did you just make all that up?

Ignore regal/court and go look at SBD and QED. Much more honest and less ned orintated

TB's will set you back over 2k for a basic setup. Giving about 180+bhp with a decent ECU.

Highlift cams: How high is our high? 270+ will need new pistons, and pref solid lifters and associated springs/caps etc - another few k's

ECU - say 400-500

For a cool freeby do the breather mod, I did it today and the car runs loads smoother at lower revs, really easy too. No power increase though.

The problem with these engines is they make pretty decent power to begin with so tuning to get big power gains turns into an expensive job. They do respond very well to throttle bodies though, a reliable 220bhp is relatively easily achieved but it means new management, cams, pistons, rod bolts, lifters etc. not gonna have much change outta £3k for that little lot.

I'd prefer to go for a good TB set-up than a turbo really, look at QED's site or SBD.

i done the breather mod, had no option as my ISCV was stuck wide open, just after i put my engine in.

another easy mod is to remove the orange segment shape from the throttle/butterfly valve

Really, that much?

I was looking at the QED Q420 kit and the guy who put my engine had there price list and said it was just under £3k, there are no prices on the site though so I cant back that up.

Have you got the QED kit for yours with the DTA management?

Aaah shit yeah, forgot about all that!! £5k prob aint all that far off then by the time the heads come off, new management, fitting trumpets and properly setting it up.

Yeah, I cant see it being all that hard to do the basic fitting, it's all just basic engine stuff as far as I can see. Is the management just a direct replacement for the Vaux ECU or is it a full new loom?

from what I've been reading up, its a replacement loom aswell, & depending on sensors n stuff cost can vary a bit due to it
also the ECU is a replacement unit

I'm lookin at a full rebuild at the same time, aswell as a rebore, so will bring costs up a bit more, but hopefully it shouldn't be too much as its just a case of them shipping me some 88mm pistons instead of 86mm (i think thats the norm size ones) jobies

Mine has just been rebuilt, I wish I would have had it bored out aswell.

Fitting the new loom is gonna be by far the hardest part then, I hate car electrics at the best of times! I reckon I'll do all the mechanical(fun stuff!) and then leave the rest to a guy I know who has TB'd a few XE's.

Chips really are useless. I wouldnt get anything other than a unichip.

Remove AFM filters.

Decent exhaust manifold.

Depends on budget.

Every 6 months isn't a lot

PLus the bonus of Carbs is you can ditch the ECU = no cables and wires all ofver the place = neat and tidy

You can still get over 200bhp with carbs.

my m8 changed from ECU to carbs n had it running at 195bhp, but it was a bitch to keep adjusting them

they way i see it is going backwards to tune an engine (backwards as in less advanced)

There are those that swear by carbs etc.... but i dont think i could be bothered with the hassle

Also carbs get through petrol like you have shares in Shell. Properly set up TB's can improve fuel consumption at low revs.
