enclosure sub you would put in a box with a defined volume, and a free air would sit on a shelf with no defined amount of air i presume

You presume right. However I may be wrong but I thing that free air may give better volume. There has to be a reason for enclosed type subs, so I assume that its something to do with changing the quality of sound or the amount of resonance.

The free air sub is mounted on your parcel shelf, using the boot space as its box. And the 'enclosure' sub as the name suggests needs a box. It is best to stay clear of 'free air' subs.
