Selling the Corsa in a few weeks, and buying an Astra coupe, but i can't decide which to go for. The turbo is no practical at my age so looking at the 1.8 and 2.2.
On paper the 1.8 and 2.2 are very similar in performance, but has anyone drive both? Is there much of a difference in handling, performance, responsiveness?
Any help appreciated

thinkin its gonna be the 2.2
seen a few 52 reg ones with low miles for around the £10k mark.
Was also looking at either
Celica 1.8 premium
BMW 318 (new shape but prob 2/3 years old)
or Audi A3 1.8
Any thoughts?

prefer the 'status' of the BMW, but for around £10k its mostly 2 year old 318s so i've almost made my mind up on the astra.

Coupes start from under 10k. You'd be lucky to find a GSi at less than 15k.
The 1.8 and 2.2 are similar to 60 on paper as the 1.8 has a far shorter gearbox to make use of the smaller amount of power. The 2.2 is a nicer engine though and if you can go for that one, do so. Its also worth looking out for one with leather as it makes it easier to re-sell. I'd personally go for either an SE 1 or 2 or one which has the factory style pack as you get 17s and some other small touches on all of these. Its also worth choosing a late one with the darker tail lights and chrome strip IMO these are nice additions.
They don't look great with either the factory 16s or a lot of aftermarket rims. Having said that there are a lot of choices where styling are concerned if you start with a basic ones, these chaps have the right idea:

cheers Vibrio, nah the BMW isn't really practical anyway. Older, slower, less equipment and higher service costs.

1.8 16v is fast for a N/A engine from Vauxhall
0-60 8.5 seconds
If I was going to be buying a Astra it would be the Mk4 GSi in Arden blue.
