I have a new Corsa 1.2 SXI (black) which I love. Im looking to upgrade my ICE. Im going to be getting a Creative Zen MP3 player:

I want to connect this to my stereo. Looking at the manual for the stereo (CDR 2005), it says it can take an external source, so I was planning on connecting a wire from that and have it appear in the storage compartment near the cigarette lighter where I could connect the player. How easy will it be to route a cable form the stereo to here?

I then got thinking, wondering what the quality of the aux-in on that stereo is like? Then I started wondering if I should get a new one.

Im quite happy with the stereo as it is although I would prefer a bit more bass, and it starts to distort just before the max volume I like it. Is the issue here with the speakers or the head unit or both?

Without spending too much money what do you think I should do? If I were to get new speakers, I would want them in the current places with no 6x9s in the parcel shelf or a sub in the boot (I know Im boring). I like to have a well balanced, very clean sound with good bass but not drowning everything else out.

I mainly listen to dance and trance by the way, if that helps.

To listen to Dance/Trance properly you'll need a sub in the boot, and I'd bin the standard head unit and buy an MP3 unit.

If the system is set up properly then the music should never be drowned out.

I really dont want to put a sub in my boot though. Im not after insane bass, just a clean powerful sound that can take a bit more vloume than the standard kit gives.

What is your opinion on digital tuners? Is the radio quality a lot better? Can you give me a pointer to some good ones that would still be able to use the steering wheel controls (with an adaptor).

Also, what speakers would be good for the front/back that dont cost too much and would ballance each other nicely?

I don't know of any Digital tuners but I have a Pioneer 8400 MP3 player and its ace. As for the speakers I don't think there is any point in upgrading them if your not going to upgrade the head unit. The rear speaker are to small to produce any sort of decent sound anyway so I think your best bet would be to put some 6x9s in the rear shelf as this will give some bass and volume. I know you don't want to go down this route but I think its the only option.

All I have in my car is a set of components in the doors and a 12" sub in the boot both running off their own amps. I have no rear speakers at all and it sounds excellent, very clear with a tight punchy bass.

Im not sure what Im going to do now.. I think I have decided that I am going to get a new head unit and new speakers, but will have to do it a bit at a time as money comes in. I wont be doing it till about November anyway (Im just about to graduate from uni and with moving/starting my new job Im going to be a bit broke till then). This is my plan:

1) Get a new head unit - Im very interested in hearing peoples views on digital radio tuners here as I do listen to the radio and would love it if the quality was a lot better than analogue radio.

2) About the same time get the mp3 player and sort out a cable for connecting it to the head unit. How difficult it will be to route this cable I dont know?!?

3) Save money!

4) get some good speakers and quality cables (drag out all the standard crap). What I am going to do about speakers I dont know as I am reluctant to take up boot space with a sub, and dont 6x9s drop down a long way into the boot from the parcel shelf?

I`m sure the cable should be able to be routed some way or another, but would this sort of mp3 player work with the 2005. What sort of plug is the external souce like.

Thats great news! Can you crank up the volume and bass levels quite a bit higher now then? If this is the case I think I will go down this road. Are the standard rears OK then without being replaced?

OK, so what are the maximum size speakers you can fit in the front and rear (replacing the default speakers) in the Corsa C? What size would you recomend? What makes / models would you recomend (taking into account that these would be the only speakers in the car)

Front = 17cm with autoleads adapters.
Rear = 10cm I think but not really worth changing.

Just fade the sound towards the front to take some of the sound away from the rears. Put some Dynamat behind the front door speakers aswell as this vastly improves sound quality.

you can fit 6.5" as i said in the front, but u need the autoleads adaptors which need some dressing to get the 6.5" to fit,

i wouldnt replace the stock rears, they're too small and you wouldnt get much bigger there, if you want better rear, disconnect them and buy a stealth shelf, and some good quality 6x9s, these will handle your bass no probs.

when i had the stock hu and the 6.5" fronts, i could have the bass at +6 and the hu up full and they wouldnt distort

OK, well this is my plan now.

1) Get a good HU with mp3 playback and amp outputs incase I need them
2) Get some good front 17cm speakers and install with Dynamat

If I then decide that I want even more performance:

3) Get a 4 channel amp and connect 2 channels of it to the front speakers with new speaker cable

If Im still not happy with it:

4) Get a smallish sub and connect it to the remaining 2 channels of the amp.

Sound like a good plan? I think so.

At the moment, Im looking at this headunit:

Im not sure if it will look right though. Here is a quick mock-up I made:
