You'll need a 3.5mm jack (I think), to plug into back of sound card and phonos will go into stereo.

In other words its not gonna be too crystal. Running it through an AV reciever would be better, although it'd be more costly. You would also benefit from a decent sound card with phono connections if possible.

the problem your gonna have is the run from the pc upstairs to the hifi downstairs. Yes you can run a jack to phono cable for about 10-20m (cant remember the exact figure) but the quality will get crapper and crapper the longer the cable is. Best bet is it either try and solve it abit by using decent cable/connectors or doing it digital to an amp (either an av amp/reciever or an amp with a digital input).
Ive got a similar setup here, but my amp and pc are about 30cm's away from each other and the cable was specially made for me and wasnt cheap either (50 odd quid)
However, if you really serious about getting your mp3s downstairs, then you can get mp3 servers, that look like a cd player in your hifi (seperates) but connects to your pc via a RJ45 (network) cable. And basically it streams everything from your computer, but the mp3 server offer digital outputs plus your usual set of phonos However, something like this will set ya back a few hundred.
hope this helps mate

Good cables make all the difference
I spent £40 on a phono to phono cable last week and its dramatically improved the sound. Couldnt believe it really, i was sceptical at first but now i know.
For speakers take a look at the Richer Sounds website, you WONT find stuff cheaper!!

ok mate, you tell me how you can plug a wireless 54G adaptor into a hifi and ill buy one
And like nath said, cables DO make a huge difference and does stop alot of shite creeping into the signal back/forth to yor amps/cd players etc. However, if you put a shite signal down a cable is doesnt matter how much you spent on the cable your still gonna get a shite signal outta the thing

I find it funny when people spend big bucks on home cinema then scrimp on cables. Why have top notch components and crap cables?? The mind boggles! Cables are just as important as good quality components.

yea, but you could have just said that mate How am i suppose to have known from that post that you had a laptop in the equation? For all i know, you could have one of those mp3 servers and then a RJ45 to Wireless converts/adaptors (dell do them i think) and then have a router or something upstairs And a laptop isnt exactly the best source for audio either and it would be easier buying on of those mp3 servers since it will fit nicely in with the hifi, remote controlled and most importantly offers a decent signal out of the thing - in digital and analog formats
