New Lexus GS A Quattro
14/01/2004 093 AM - By Richard Bosselman

Having already bettered Mercedes-Benz quality with it's S-Class-like LS430, and taken on BMW's cornerstone 3-Series with the IS200/300 clone, Japan's premier Lexus brand is now firing a broadside at the third luxury German, Audi.

And it's striking right at the heart ... by going quattro with the next-generation GS sports sedan.

Revealed at the Detroit motor show, and possibly a year away from New Zealand release, the sharp-looking new model is the first Lexus passenger car to get four-wheel drive.

Previously, the only all-paw Lexus-badged cars have been off-roaders - the RX330, a high-brow cousin of the Toyota Highlander, and the LandCruiser-based LX470.

Change doesn't end here. The GS has dropped another Lexus convention, a straight-six mill, for a V6, also of three litres' capacity, and adopted the six-speed automatic gearbox introduced with the recent LS430 facelift.

The United States is the primary market for Lexus, so accordingly North Americans will be first to drive the car, from later this year.

It will be offered there with the flagship LS430's 207kW/417Nm 4.3-litre quad cam V8 as well as that all-new three-litre V6 which makes 183kW and 309Nm. Both versions employ a new six-speed automatic transmission with sequential manual change.

As well as the obvious benefits from an all-paw advantage, ride and handling are expected to benefit from the new Adaptive Variable Suspension that lets the driver adjust the damper settings according to road conditions and speed of attack.

The GS also brings various up-to-date systems including a tyre pressure monitoring system, reversing camera and swivelling headlamp setup. A keyless system allows the driver to lock, unlock and start the car simply by touching the door handle (with a key fob in pocket) and then simply pressing a push-button to start. All this technology has been transferred from the LS430.

Variable-force front airbags and knee airbags for driver and front-seat passenger are among the improved safety features.

In some markets, the car will also offer an optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) that, the maker says, will help reduce collision injury and damage. The system uses a millimeter-wave radar sensor to detect obstacles in front of the car and a pre-collision system computer with vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate inputs that help to determine in advance whether a collision is unavoidable. The system then preemptively retracts front seat belts and prepares Brake Assist for increased braking force to help reduce collision speed.

Taking cues from last year's LF-S concept car, styling has taken a big step forward. With a wide, powerful stance and very clean side lines, the GS is seemingly the first new-era Lexus to display the cues that will, in time, be transferred to every Lexus model, hopefully giving the range the "family" look it currently lacks.

A 5cm longer wheelbase and short overhangs blend well with the long bonnet. Lexus says the pulled-back cabin and "slingshot" windows are to recall classic sports car proportions, while the vertical grille surrounded by four independent headlamps connects the new GS with the outgoing model, "but with a futuristic look." The front features a spoiler with integrated fog lamps. The V8 has 18-inch wheels.

The creation of a unique spatial feeling in the passenger compartment is central to the new Lexus design direction, the maker says.

"The interior of the new GS has a precision, luxury feel with ultra-premium wood, polished metal and leather accents."

Lexus said it aimed to create a haven for peaceful comfort and relaxation, from contoured and supportive front seats with optional climate control to the standard 10-speaker audio system with simple steering wheel controls.

Lexus also showcased the hybrid version of the RX330 four-wheel-drive at Detroit. The RX400h is the first luxury 4x4 with a hybrid powertrain.

Based on the Toyota system as used in the new Prius, the Hybrid Synergy Drive includes a 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine and two powerful electric motors, all working in parallel, with the power directed to whichever pair of wheels needs it most at any given moment. There's an additional generator and improved regenerative braking.

Altogether, the RX400h has a maximum power output close to 201kW, and it's expected to combine a 0-100kmh time of less than 8.0 seconds with the world's best four-wheel-drive CO2 returns.
