i was coming down the M5 on my way back from Catterick North yorkshire, went to get some petrol and i said to my bro lets test my cars 0-60mph time, it did it in 12 secs which i thought was pretty good has it wasnt the best of starts and the back seats where full of my gear and i had a full tank, was in my car last nite with my mate and we timed it did it in a wicked time of 9.5secs, now i think thats brill has all its had done is a cat-back mongoose system and a KnN filter, ok the engine has been nicely worn in with just over 100k on the clock, but if that blows on my its just a excuse to get my 2.0L

1.4 8v and 0-60 of 9.5 secs I think not...
you only have about 60 bhp... Was it down a steep hill.
I have 81 bhp and wouldn't even get close to that

1.4 8v Mpi does it in 11.5 sec-ish.... so a spi would neva be that quick unless it had a few decent engine mods!!!!
and using ur stopwatch and ur speedo aint all that accurate!
13-15 secs for a spi i recon!

ok also forgot to mention i fitted one of those pipercross ecotek filters to the pipe which comes outta the engine and goes to the manifold, and that has made my car alot more response.

A) You sure its not a MPi (82 bhp)
B) if it is a SPi, either some people are really shite drivers, or your only talking about beating your mates sxi up to like 35 mph.
Thing is, because your car is 8v, the power is imediate as you put your foot down - i.e. at 1k rpm you floor it and it'll pull hard - this gives the impression that it's really nippy. Fine for racing off of lights for a couple of seconds.
However, because of this you car lacks top end power, and as soon as the Sxi or Gsi get into their power band in 2nd or even 3rd gear - you will be left behind.

Ermm... No
Seriously though, we've all timed our cars before on watches - several problems include inacurate speedo's etc, but more importantly is usually the person will start the timer just after moving and just before hitting 60... which can be a sec or two out ...
