My mates did this for a while, turned out to be the airflow meter. Does it feel like its misfiring and spluttering lots, then backs off completely?

Mine is doing exactly the same....
The airflow meter looked clean on the outflow side... but i didn't look on the other side as it would mess up my induction kit etc...
Is it likely to be filthy on the other side of it?

it might be, take it off and have a look, has 2 jubilee clips and a wire clip and thats it so whip it off and take a look!! When i blew mine through with the air line a whole load of muck and shit flew out

My air mass sensor was spotless unfortunately
I can hear the engine hunting around on idle.... not smooth, but thats possibly a seperate problem to the ecu light.

like kerry said try the paper clip test in the FAQ if your orange light is on!! or was on for a while....dodgy idle could be idle control valve!!

I have a motronic 1.5.5 ecu and it has no L line and hence you can't do the paperclip test
I haven't the foggiest where the idle control valve is on a 1.2 16v...
