If its smooth, clean it and dry it. Apply 3 or 4 coats or plastic primer, 15 min space between coats, leave 12 hours, same with paint and as many coats of lacquer that you need to get it looking like the body paint work.

You can, but its better just spraying more on to get a completely smooth finish.

1500 grit it too smooth before primer i would say use up to 800 grit before priming then used up to 1200 for the primer and up to 1500 for the top coat

wat i did ( bro works in a bodyshop, so followed his guidence)
1. went over it with some 180 i think it was, then i used a scotch brite to get in all the texture.
2. couple of coats of plastic primer
3. bout 20 mins later i sprayed on about 4 thick coats of grey cellulose primer (using a spray gun and compressor)
4. sanded each layer back slightly, as to not break through the primer.
5. did that with 400 grit, then went over with 800 grit,
6. paint
7. laquer
8. leave a couple of days, then 1500 grit
9. t-cut or compound it
10. polish it.
easy. forget this leave 24 hours between primers and paint, thats a complete load of bollox.

Just knock the pin out of the back off the handle, that way it'll be far easier to paint.
Slip the pin back in once its finished.
