any helpfull tips please

im removing my engine tomorow
to fit a newer, better, faster, engine

stuff i want to be done tomorow

pick up engine crane
get engine trolley made
bonnet off batterey off
batt tray off
water drained and header tank off
ecu out and wiring loom into the engine bay
and maybee exhaust manifold off

ad I never used a crane, i lifted the front of the car to remove the engine & gearbox from underneath

put car up on axle-stands, not wheel ramps

put car in 5th gear & get someone to apply the brakes... slacken off the hub nuts on both wheels so there easy to get off later on.

remove the heater, all pipes, drain oil, all the usuals really! disconnect all wiring & just hang it all over the sides...

strip down the top end of the engine (head, inlet & outlet manifolds, etc...) so there is just the block & gearbox in car. (disconnecting the fuellines from the throttle-housing is easy, just give em a good pull & it will come off, but it will squirt a lil petrol aswell, so NO SMOKING!!)

drain the gearbox oil (just remove the diff-plate cover thingy, eight bolts i think)

if your using a crane, then attach it to engine to take weight, undo the upper & lower ball-joints on both sides, disconnect the hubs from the steering rack, undo the drive-shaft bolts & pull the whole strut towards you so the shafts fall out.

pull the driveshafts from the gearbox.

with engine supported, undo the rear engine mount (gearbox to bodywork one), i found it easiest to undo the mount from the car itself instead of fannying around with the bolts on the gearbox.

make sure engine is properly supported again, may be a good idea to chuck some breeze-blocks under the engine incase the crane slips...

remove the passenger-side mount first, then the drivers second, making sure engine is supported equaly at all times.

disconnect the gearbox-to-gear-shift lever bitty at back of engine, and just cut the old heater pipes which connect to the hcore (they will be shagged anyways!)

double check make sure everything is dosconnected & then lift it out!

problem i had was removin ball-joints, didnt have a splitter, so just cut em off with a grinder!

oh and if your lifting the engine, you may be ok to leave the cylinder head on , so just remove the inlet & outlet manifolds!

Dropping the engine & draging from underneath you WILL need to strip the top down fully!

I just u2u'd u cos didnt know if ya had looked here hehehehe!

but it really is pish easy rippin the old engine out

ecu out and loom withdrawn into the bay
alternator off starter disconected
header tank off and water drained
accel +clutch cable disconected
airbox off

couldnt get to the speedo cable so ill do that tomorow--i think ill have the engine out tomorow

ad, just cut it with a stanley going from edge in, then peel it off, much easier

is the new engine electronic speedo?? cable shouldnt be too hard, you need to remove the grommet from the bulkhead & it will just pull out!

and the exhaust flaexi joint bolts didnt want to budge

wd40 & a good whack from a hammer will do the job

or if you goit access to a blow-torch, heat it up a bit & give it a smack!

no need to remove the speedo-cable then surely if both are cable driven

ahhh reet, it can be a bitch to undo, just use a set of moleys on it, should come off then, the outer-plastic-thingy is all which holds it in, but can be stubborn

once the linkage is out the way itll come off i have a gripped pliers to get it off just the linkage is in the way

i hope i get the engine out by end of tomorow

hope ya gettin pics of it all!! would be interested to see how ya lift it out!

I'm still gona end up dropping the car on the engine when I fit the new one instead of dropping the engin in the car, just think its easier cos of the 'box n all, but spose could just be me!
