Some have a temp sensor which tells the ECU if the car has warmed up or not and adds fuel like a choke. If thats faulty then it'll over fuel which may or may not lead to black smoke, depending on your cat and the actual car.

If its faulty it tends to just be on enrichment all the time, but you'd know because it would drink fuel.

I would do a compression test to make sure ya got decent compression in all ya cylinders and that they are in tollorance with eachother, my GSI started doing this before i had the engine re-built, could be ECU, brosters car did a similar thing and it was sourced as an ecu problem, if ya got a C16XE i got a spare ECU you could borrow to see if it sorts the problem

i had a similar problem when I used to boot it a bit my car spluttered, this didn't happen all the time though.
Eventually it got so bad my car actually cut of and I couldn't re start.
It ended up being my ignition coil wasn't very expensive either and now I can boot it without it shaking and spluttering

Might be the same problem, how often does it do it?
