When i am changing the colour of a car i lasso all the bit i wanna change then i go to image-adjustments- the hue and saturation and fiddle with the colours there but i can never seem to get a good black.

Yeah have been its just hard to get a good black without taking all the detail out.

try pressing ctrl-shift-u all at the same time to desaturate(take all the colour out) then go into image>adjustments>variations and get a dark blue.....then ya need to fidle ith the brightness and contrast and maybe a bit of hue and saturation
