I assume people just earn enough to warrant spending that amount on finance?

Yes.
Please don't purchase anything on Vauxhall finance, its toilet. Took me nearly 4 years to pay it off and that was 2 years after I sold the fcuking car

At the end of the day almost all finance is w*nk, you think it is great cos you are getting a brand new car for a small payment each month, but unless you get a 0% deal you end up payin well over the odds for the car, better to get a loan from one of the leading lenders such as northern rock, then you have the option of payin it off early and without a ridiculas interest rate.

When my dad got his new car from vauxhall he wanted to pay the £21k cash but they said in order for him to get it cheeper he had to go on finance, they soon changed their tune when he said he would take his money elswere. I think including the optional extras we got it about 3k cheeper, You just gotta show them that you're willing to go somewhere else and you can get big knockdowns. As for finance, go for a bank loan instead.

The 0% finance and free insurance deal on some Corsas is an offer that should be additional to that you negotiate with the dealer. Don't reveal how you want to finance the purchase until you've got the price you want. Then, as Red_Sxi said, go for the min 40% deposit. I did that last time and got a nice fat cheque from the dealer as the p-ex was worth more than the required deposit.

Cash in hand for me too. My car was cheap - £1000 - and it was also pink when I bought it. Needed T-Cutting!
