I drove the 1.8 hatchback and was quite impressed, and it drove like a car, none of the dodgy corsa handling

No, the 1.8 16v Astra G Sport with the old 115bhp engine is slow.
The newer 1.8 16v Astra G SXi's/SRi's are 125bhp and produce good performance figures for the size and spec of the car.

All 125bhp 1.8 16v Astra G's are quoted with a 8.5 0-60.
This in my eyes is very good.
This is the same engine as what is found in the Corsa C SRi 1.8 16v

yesh indeed but the c 1.8 early ones have pants gearboxes in. the new ones have a gatarac gearbox in that makes it sooo much better

its a proper sports ratio gearbox, ie good bottom end amazing mid range, excellent top end. gatarac is the make of the box. and it doesnt crunch like usual vauxhall ones

weve got a 2.2 hatch astra in the family. its good because its quick but the engine is so quiet. and they have massive tuning potential too

Jambo, there is VERY little difference between the 2.2 16v and the 1.8 16v.
Even mid range there is nothing in it.

im guessing tho ud have to rev the tits off the 1.8 to get it to go n e where? judging by my vaux 16v engine! And tunign potential? all guesses but id go with 2.2
NEver driven either was thinkin of buying the turbo in coupe or convertible guise as next car.
Oh and post editited btw, was on the fone whilst typing the 1st comment made no sense!

My 1.4 16V wasn't shy! I'd say 0-60 was 10.5 about the same as my old SRI 16V corsa.
There aint much difference in the engines like OJC said.Turbo is the king mind
I'd say 1.8 is the one to get.Sri or coupe.
